Fall 2016 School pictures!

First day of school!  8th grade for Iain, and 4th grade for Ria.  Iain was temporarily without mustache for the 1st day of school, but it is back.

A couple of cutie pie pictures of Ria to make up for the official school photo that follows.
Crazy hair!

Proud girl after 12 laps at the Walkathon:

Iain at 8th grade and 13 years old.  Yeeps!  He looks like a teen!  He IS a teen ;-).

Ria at 4th grade and 10 years old.  I wanted to do re-takes, but she wouldn't let me.  Ah well ;-).

Teenaged boy has new wheels too - the picture of him riding it was terrible, so I've switched the blog to this one.  Adult sized bikes all around!

May - landscaping the front

In May we had the front/side garden relandscaped to reduce water usage.  We got $2 per square foot of lawn removed in a rebate from the water district, which paid for just a small part of it, but we'd been meaning to do something about the front for a long time, so it got us moving ;-).

All the landscaping is with low maintenance and low water usage native plants that should require no more than a few waterings per year once the plants are well established, which will take 2 full years. (We have to wait 2 years before we even know what it was designed to look like!)

Here's some comparison pictures.  Left are the "before" from November, after 2 years of no watering of the lawn.  The right are pictures from just after installation.

The left front yard now has a path from the garbage bins to the sidewalk, which is a GREAT improvement for garbage day!
The right hand front yard has a few boulders, and the swath with the black ground cover will be a "meadow" of sturdy short grasses than can be walked on.
There's a 3rd boulder at the side yard, back in the corner of the meadow by the driveway.  And, look!  No ivy!!!
The weeping birch from the front by the path to the front door is unfortunately gone.  It died last August.  It seems that the reason they put all these birch trees in front lawns is because they can tolerate the huge amount of water that lawns require.  Remove the lawn and the huge amounts of water, and they can't survive.  We, of course, didn't know about this until after it up and died on us, so we couldn't save it with monthly waterings.  Poot.

Its been almost 5 months now, so things are slightly more grown in, especially in the shady patch around the Japanese maple.  However, I'm going to wait a little longer before I do some update pictures.  The soil was not rototilled to death before putting in the plants, specifically so they would grow more slowly and be more hardy -- so nothing is going to look showy until at least next spring.  Hopefully we'll have good rain this winter to help them establish.

OOh, also in Feb, the Cat Wall is complete!

February wasn't 100% about visitors and travel, we also finished the cat wall of joy!

They can leap from the art table to the hammock 1/2 way up the right most window, then up to the platform of Ikea hack (optionally via the sisal post), up and around the wall, then via a few more sisal posts they reach the bookshelves on the wall you can't see, and down onto our heads on the couch ;-).

What we did in February - Part the second - Las Vegas

Also in February we did a crazy 2 day visit to Vegas so I could see Guppy and Kellie - friends from Rice - for the first time since their wedding 24 years ago.

We stayed on the west side of Vegas by the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.  The visitor center at Red Rock Canyon was really nice, and the hike was lovely.

This is the view from the visitor center - perfectly placed for a great view.
Mr. Tortoise (I can't recall his name, the kids will surely inform me soon and I'll update) was out from hibernation and enjoying the sun.

Check out the root structure!

Rock paintings are cool!
That evening we went to a Cirque du Soleil show, "Zarkana"

We started the next morning with a tour of Hoover Dam

Then back to casino-land to have brunch/lunch with the folks
 Kellie, Guppy, and Paul
 William, Iain, and Ria
 Mona and Kellie
Ria fell in love with Kellie, bonding over the love of kitties!  They are both wearing their cat t-shirts here.  Ria wanted to return to Vegas the next week so that we could see Kellie again, but I had to break it to her that they live in Texas.
And, then, homewards ho!

What we did in February - Part the first - 3 out of 4 Stenbergs visit

Happy last few weeks of summer!

While I wait for the school pictures to come in to force me to update pics on the blog, I thought I'd update the blog.  We've actually been pretty busy this year.  It may take several posts.  The school pics will take longer than usual to post as Iain was sick for photo day, and will have to wait for make-ups in late September to get his taken.  So, those won't come until October.

February had visitors!

Eva, Andy, and Björn came to visit (Tor was back at school) and do a driving tour down the west coast.  This was the 1st time Andy and Björn have been here since Iain was an infant.  We went hiking in the Redwoods and toured Alcatraz.

Photo bomb!

We really didn't take almost any pictures at Alcatraz, mostly just on the boat.
(This one makes up for all those perky pics of Björn in the redwoods!)

I look reeeeeealllly smart listening to my headphones on the tour.
And, finally, kids playing Talisman.  (I hate how our cameras always make people on the edge of the field go WIDE.  We should either get nicer cameras, or try harder to not have anyone at the edges.)
